Ouro Preto, capital of the province of Minas Gerais, gradually became a university city and gave rise to the creations of the “ Republicas”: organizations that are born with the aim of living in community in a studentil environment. The “Republicas” are quite similar to American fraternities. Each republica has it’s owns statues, values and flag.
Tiraburka is a republic that has been in Ouro Preto for over 10 years. The founders left another republic and created their own because of the lack of sensibility and equal values they wanted. Tiraburka is characterised as being a Feminist Republic, without a heavy hierarchy, and where everyone is treated equally.
They fight for equality in educational institutions, and for measures against the sexual abuse that many women have suffered and suffer in student environments.
Tiraburka (quitarse el burka) es una república que lleva 10 años en Ouro Preto. Las fundadoras salieron de otra república y crearon la suya propia al no encontrar ninguna con sus mismos valores y pasar varias dificultades en la ciudad, donde cualquier persona diferente y que no sigue los patrones de la sociedad patrialcal es juzgado Tiraburka se caracteriza por ser una república feminista, sin una jerarquía pesada y donde todas son por iguales y se cuidan como hermanas.
En la fotografía aparecen Barriguinha, Midas y Tambe integrantes de la república, Milena y Larisa que son las calouros ( personas que están en el periodo de prueba para entrar) y agregadas Prezofijo e Carol.
